MBA NEW DEFINITION FOR EMPLOYABILITY
When Mrs. Kavitha died I expressed sorrow on reading the news in the PC. About half a dozen MBAs were around me and none seemed to share the agony and when I repeated Karkare the police officer one of them vaguely remembered the name.
While I do not expect them to remember
every martyr by name, recent events related to country's security I thought
should be within their knowledge. But as I interacted more I found that MBA was
just another degree for them to get a job and not for the prestige and pride of
it. While general knowledge need not be a yardstick to measure merit to a
particular job, absence of it or disinterest in it is a pointer to judge personality and knowledge. That exactly is the reason among many when most graduates are not employable for their qualification.
“Education is the manifestation of perfection
already in man”. This quote by Swami Vivekananda is a gospel to me. An MBA need not jump in joy for the gold
medal of Mary Kom or the hockey team in Asiad which ardent followers like me do
even without holding an MBA. But, knowing how rare is a gold medal in Asiad or
a grand slam in tennis, or an athletics medal for India in Olympics are matters
that much less educated but more knowledge oriented people would know.
When one is
educated the expectation of manifestation starts. Be it in dress, behaviour,
language, courtesy, manners, decency and above all knowledge. Master of
Business Administration is too high sounding though simplified as a mere MBA,
and the expectations are boosted by the word ‘master’ understood commonly as
‘one who has complete knowledge’ or an ‘expert’. Hence it is just not complete
knowledge of cricket or hockey but that covers a vast area bracketed under the
term ‘Business’.
‘Business’ is
widely understood as ‘industrial or commercial activity’ and in the era of
20-20, cricket is very much a commercial activity supported by industries.
Apart from cricket, there are commercial activities galore. Be it the growing
real estate, infrastructure or change of guard in Infosys, new
mergers/acquisitions etc. Above all, with the fees skyrocketing for MBA in
premier institutions, education itself is business.
‘Administration’
is the toughest of the three words to practice, though the degree signifies
that the person has mastered it. In essence, a qualified MBA may not be a ‘know
all’ person. But he should know what all exists to be known and handled. He may
not know Carnatic music and western music but need to know who are Mandolin
Srinivas and Jennifer Lopez. Similarly right from the plight of Kashmiri
Pundits and Tibetans to the enterprise of Anu Aga in Thermax and whether
Karbala is in Iraq or a suburb of Kampala and ISIS is not a spelling mistake
but a new terror outfit he is expected to know a variety of things that may at
some point or other come as data for decision if he were to hold high
positions. The awareness and understanding that can be displayed by virtue of
knowledge in processing data or participating in discussion is a sure route to
self belief. Also, higher the knowledge higher the recognition.
A qualification would be respected only if it
is visible tangibly. Knowledge outside the curricula augments visibility of the
competence acquired in education. Therefore it is very essential to possess
such knowledge befitting the qualification and designation to command social
status and respect in the society though a pass with ‘distinction’ is very much
possible without possessing such knowledge.
