GOOD BAD AND UGLY IN RIGHT PROPORTION IS LEADERSHIP
The good bad and the ugly in right mix is what is
leadership. People adore leaders since their good part is more visible while
the bad and ugly form part of strategy that leadership is always made up of.
Talking from the Indian perspective we talk of "sama dana bedha dhanda" as the right techniques leaders should
adopt. The good and the 'sama' sync well as you do not need anything else to
convince someone except good words and normally the method also works with
people who behave 'good' for whatever purpose.
'Dana' is the way people who evade being good fall for, most
often. 'Dana' is nothing but buying out people with favors and in present day
materialistic world it is all the more easier for leaders to choose the apt
item of 'Dana' which different people opt for. The role of leadership becomes a
little complicated and demands the real skill of the leader both in strategy
and approach when the last two options have to be invoked.
'bedha' in blunt language is divide and rule. When the
division takes place on its own due to internal dissensions among a group of
people the job is easier. But when it has to be engineered a person just cannot
remain a good soul and achieve it. Overt and covert actions, deals,
understandings and even exploitation of weaknesses form part of the operating
system to ensure unity is fragile or disoriented in the opponent's camp.
Persons indulging in
such actions would obviously be pretenders and tricksters and their behavior
unreliable and lacking truth. To control such persons without getting exposed
and monitoring their actions to ensure that they do not exceed the brief
happens when one adopts methods that are seen as bad. A good leader ensures
that the ultimate goal achieved through this kind of operation is for the good
of all in the society. Such kind of work is mostly got done by the leaders
through people who maneuver and scheme operations and the leader holds the
reins of control on his hands.
'Dhanda' is a much more risky operation than other methods
and the leader has to take calculated risk and weigh the pros and cons before
the operation. Normally practiced after the other three methods fail, a good
leader analyses the response of people for the earlier attempts and weighs his
strengths and options. It may be arrest of a leader, attacking an enemy
territory, imposing huge financial penalties or withdrawing some privileges
that would cripple the opponent. It may also be some actions that could come
after decades in life stories by some insider and spoken of as a scandal and
are very much part of various sections of the IPC. Yet such actions are needed
to run the show as a leader. Governance be it the State or Corporate, a Trust
or a College does not happen in the normal course without such actions.
Good people are averse
to the thought of indulging in such actions. Yet when a leader takes the risk
and achieves results such actions even if made public are readily condoned,
ignored at times even appreciated. Though the Good Samaritans may not like
participation, inputs and logistics support come from them quite often as they
do realize that the route to achieve good is also through the path of evil. A
leader may tread in the path of an evil for a while, but not an evil himself is
always welcomed. Hence when the leadership succeeds in delivery, people
remember the good part that is visible and manifest and may not comprehend
subsisting of the other aspects.
Hence Leadership is good, bad and ugly in right proportion
not for personal gain but for society benefit.
