COURAGE VS TEMERITY -- LEADERSHIP BALANCE
Temerity
is very different from courage. Temerity is plain audacity which is most often
aimless and is displayed more to exhibit nerve without being pertinent. Leaders
who confused temerity with courage often landed themselves and their team in
disaster. Courage is a consistent behavioral pattern that is largely goal
oriented for benefit of self or team whereas temerity is an isolated act of
high risk bravery more to showcase a personal bravado.
Successful
leaders have the ultimate prudence especially on courage. Prudence is nothing
but using the discretion with good sense and care. In other words, they know
when to keep their mouth shut and keep profile low and also when to loudmouth
and foul mouth. In the world of "dos' and don't s" they are most often
correct with their "dos' and don't s". But since in the matter of
courage they risk being branded with cowardice; they need to weigh the pros and
cons all the more carefully.
Cowardice is different from tactics and a few temporary steps backward, for a quantum jump ahead is a time tested strategy that brought success to many kings in wartime as well. Successful leaders keep that as the guiding code.
Hence leaders need to be encouraged to be courageous and restrained if they intend to be audacious.
