SUPERVISION VS BOSSING OVER
·
Calling
'urgent' what is otherwise routine/ordinary work is the typical start of a
bossing over behavioral pattern. A good genuine boss would allow a routine work
by the subordinate without overseeing, look to support a urgent work and jump
to support a job that is immediate.
· A
bossing over person would focus on times unspent on work than on unfinished
work. Where were you missing for half an hour? Why so much time on a personal
call? These are the typical comments rather than, are the project reports
ready? It is needed by tomorrow etc.
· Good
supervision is not focusing on work when the work is in process unless support
is called for.
· Bossing
over person would state the obvious as his instruction. "Switch off computers while going
home" is a typical statement.
· "Good,
Very good " are statements dished out as intended appreciation where
routine work is performed equally routinely.
· A good
supervisor's concern is process and work going smooth while those bossing over
are concerned with getting credit for smooth working.
· Good
supervisor keeps safe distance from work of the subordinates and intrudes when
demanded or needed. Those bossing over are keen to guide and direct even after
destination reached.
· Inadequacy
of self esteem foists bossing behavior for approving ego.
The most glaring difference
between a bossing over person and a supervising person is during review by
higher officials, the supervisor would be on the side of the subordinate, while
the bossing over person joins the bosses in critical reviews.
So understand the difference
and learn to differentiate between supervision and bossing over.
