LEADERSHIP TRICK -- SWOT-- DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND BUT A WILY TOOL

Many times, the decision of leaders is unacceptable even to close confidantes. At times it is also inscrutable to them. The reason is SWOT. What are strengths and weaknesses is visible to all, but opportunities and threats are most often invisible and can be seen only by those who visualize the larger picture with a strategic mind. Also, it is not the immediate gain or loss but long-term regular benefits that decide matters.

SWOT analysis is done on a continuous basis by leaders, as they are dynamic in nature. Among them opportunities and threats are very variable depending upon supportive and influencing factors. A leader continuously assesses the variable factors to conclude, how they affect his position. This is because when vision and strategy go together, the larger perspective is more clearly visible and expert leaders catch it quicker than others.

That also explains as to why sometimes even the closest confidante of leaders are unable to understand a leader’s decisions.  Let us therefore learn and do SWOT for ourselves and understand people better.

EDUCATION AND SCHOOLS

It was a quiz program to test the knowledge of Tamil. Three schools participated out of which two had good brand value and were also from urban/metro areas. The third was from a small remote village near Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district. I was delighted when the boys from this school won and earned handsome rewards in cash and kind. It is a middle school of less than 500 students and KPA of teachers include visiting homes of students and convincing parents on value of education to send students to schools instead of work. In others words marketing of a school which did not have brand value. The students wore new uniform for the program and were beaming with confidence to compete. The urge for knowledge and consequent respect and recognition it fetches ignited their spirit to be competitive.
