DMK AND AIADMK -- BONHOMIE VS ACRIMONY
Bonhomie is a traditional
word to describe goodwill oriented relation normally between two people having
a deep sense of mutual regard. I was pleasantly surprised by the reaction of
the yet again newly elected CM for the outburst of the former CM. The reaction
is far from bonhomie yet a first step to move towards that.
Hostility, acrimony and
disregard were some of the features of relationship that existed between the
two Dravidian parties of Tamil Nadu though such things originated due to personal animosity and bitterness
between the heads of the two parties. With this backdrop every action,
utterance, gesture, expression and statement that is devoid of negativity
itself would be seen as friendliness.
Leadership is also about
understanding and addressing the origin of the issue. But in this case the more
one goes to the origin the bitterness would grow all the more. Circumstances
are the other option that forces change of behavior. The election results
though threw up a victor has not vanquished anyone. Both parties can take
credit for creating history though the lessons are different.
Repeat of victory of one
party is balanced by the defeat with unprecedented huge number in seats and low
in margin for the other. This has made the ruling party to feel that there is
no time to celebrate and their journey has begun in a new arduous route where
accountability is more tangible and immediate.
For the opposition the
threat is more from the parties that were blown out of the race in the last election
as they would watch their tacit support to the rulers on wrong doings
particularly on issues, where the opposition while in power were the pioneers
in originating the wrongs. Irrespective of personal animosities of leaders it
is time for the people of the state to experience good governance through
transparency (which at times could be uncomfortable even to the opposition
party) whether the two parties maintain bonhomie or acrimony.
When the former Chief
Minister came to take oath as MLA from one side door of the speaker, the
present sneaked out through the other. Let us interpret this as acrimony
avoided to open the door for bonhomie as the people of the state are overdue to
get good governance.
