HR -- PLEASE REINVENT THE FAREWELL CULTURE
When I
recently attended a farewell in a Bank, I felt the absence of that culture
today in most industry. People hop jobs for more salary today, but the salary
remains more balanced in Public sector with the constant increase thro DA and
increments. But with a job span of over thirty years in the same organization
if not in the same office also gets them the benefit of fulfillment of
intangible human needs like appreciation, respect, recognition and esteem.
While
farewell is inevitably offered in most government offices, a spontaneous and
widespread participation by those who revere the person and his contribution
makes it a memorable day for the individual who feels that all the pain and
pressure that the job role offered were worth undergoing again, when he hears
of the acknowledgement of his contribution. Sadly this culture is not prevalent
in present day organizations where a parting is symbolized by a lunch or dinner
outside the office often in alcoholic aroma.
This apart
the parting remains more social than official. An organization needs to respect
and recognize the contribution by a farewell. But unfortunately today it is
forced resignation in many cases initiated and executed by the HR who in
reality is responsible for a decent farewell. But when the HR also is packed
off unceremoniously in organizations it is a luxury to think of decency,
courtesy and manners in parting.
When a
person leaves even on his own, the organizations treat him with hostile posture
though outwardly happy words are spoken. It is very exceptional to see a person
going back to his organization just for a cup of tea and socialize. He would be
viewed with suspicion by both the present and past employers. What is easily
forgotten is while working most people shed their sweat, energy and even health
for the company and remained indispensable for handling many a problematic
issues.
Some
companies have even made insensitive remarks that they were paid salary for
their work. If so what is the need and logic for incentives and promotions when
one is paid for work. In the world of professionalism and profit maximization
human values becoming secondary is understandable but not pardonable are lack
of human values.
It is again
the job of HR to reinvent the culture of farewell, as a human being feels loyal
and devoted even to a company that he left if his contribution is acknowledged
and respected than highly paid. Goodwill for which companies yearn and spend
millions of money would be forthcoming free of cost if they display the decency
to invite all the left employees in a year for a get together. This would
largely balance for the sense of revulsion that an unceremonious exit causes.
Ceremonious
means formal, solemn, dignified and official. People deserve exactly that as
farewell when they exit a company after a good tenure. Notwithstanding the
modern culture of professionalism and profit orientation people deserve that
and let the HR take the initiative to restore that culture.
